A diaphanous and bright duplex

A diaphanous and bright duplex

Before the reform, this Barcelona duplex It looked smaller. The reason was its fragmented distribution, based on narrow rooms that prevented appreciating the real area - very wide - of the house. The owners commissioned a comprehensive reform to Fondarius Architecture team. The works focused on removing all unnecessary walls to create on the ground floor an open space that will integrate the living room, the dining room, the kitchen and a playroom for the children. Without doors or partitions, this new distribution gave a radical turn to the duplex that, suddenly, revealed a large surface with a loft aesthetic that evokes the New York industrial buildings. However, the removal of walls posed some difficulties.

Both in the living room and in the kitchen, the architects found load-bearing walls impossible to eliminate due to constructive safety issues. The solution was keep pillars and partitions of half body which, in turn, were integrated into the project as elements with a decorative function. Thus, the metal pillar served to delimit the hall of the hall.

If all the environments where the family makes life in common were concentrated on the ground floor, the upper floor was reserved for the bedrooms. But both in one and the other, the Fondarius Architecture team had to face a new problem: the duplex had three terraces whose height was above ground level inside the house. To solve it, they resorted to a stone bench of San Vicente, which steps the access to the outside and, in passing, serves as a versatile auxiliary surface that is used both as a seat and as a shelf. Once all the construction aspects were solved, the decoration was adapted to the new loft air achieved in the house. Design pieces, in the right proportion, contribute to keeping the environments clear with a minimal aesthetic.

House plan and ideas

- In the living room, the false ceiling, in addition to housing the facilities, ends a few centimeters from the wall, a mini space enough to hide the boxes of the blinds and the curtain rails and blinds.
- The suppression of the partitions allows a fluid circulation throughout the house and conveys a sense of depth. In addition, no obstacle, whether real or visual, puts a brake on the passage of light entering from the terraces.
- The decoration, based on selected pieces and design, achieves clear environments with a sophisticated and chic air.
